Great rugby despite the weather
Ross Cowie, Chairman Eastern Counties CCPD presents the Brian Borges Trophy to Hugo Kelleway, Captain of the victorious Woodbridge squad
Eastern Counties held their annual Colts Sevens on Sunday at Colchester RFC, playing for the Brian Borges Trophy.
Despite the horribly unseasonal non-sevens weather, there was some great rugby, and many very competitive games played in a superb atmosphere.
10 teams entered, and each team played 4 games, before the leading 4 played semis & finals for the Trophy, and the next 4 for the Plate.
Thanks to Newmarket & Woodbridge B who both turned up with just 7 players each, but fulfilled their commitments before graciously withdrawing before the knockout phase.
in the Plate , Bury beat L & W, and Diss beat Braintree
It should be note that Diss have been unable to run a Colts side since Christmas, but this smaller format enabled them to raise a team; they finished 8th in the round-robin having started quietly, but improving each round saw them collect the Plate, defeating Bury by 19 points to 12.
An outstanding Woodbridge squad, having beaten Colchester in the semis, beat Ipswich YM (who had defeated Essex guests, Mavericks 21-19 in their semi) by 33 points to 14 in the final.
Around 120 boys enjoyed the day.
Thanks to the team of Suffolk referees who managed the day.
