Match report:-
Eastern Counties took on Devon in the Quarter Finals of the U20’s Shield on Sunday the 2nd April and came away with a convincing win against a very determined Devon team. The visitors had to cope with a long journey but had a Saturday night stay in the area and it was the away side that looked dominant in the first 15 minutes when really they could have scored twice but for poor execution. Counties though got into their stride and on 16 minutes fullback Aaron Frost broke through to open the scoring with a try, converted by Smith, and there then followed a period of complete dominance by the home team who scored regularly over the next 20 minutes through tries from Storey and Duffield and two penalties and a conversion from Smith. To their credit however Devon mustered themselves in the last few minutes of the half and applied considerable pressure to Counties resulting in two tries for Shakespear and Luscombe, both of which were converted by Pinkus.
Half Time: 25 14 In the second half Counties now had the advantage of the slope and the jitters of the crowd were soon soothed by a try within a minute from Lewis and that's the way it stayed for the next 25 in what then turned out to be an even contest with Devon probably having a bit more of the ball, but not quite getting their final execution right and Counties always looking dangerous when in procession and in the end it was this danger which was to finally undo Devon with Counties scoring two splendid tries from Easton and then finally Collard who completed a full length of the pitch run with the crowd in full voice! Both converted by Smith. Devon did manage a consolation Penalty try, converted by Pinkus, right at the end, which their efforts fully deserved.
Counties will now travel to Dorset and Wilts for a Semi Final on Easter Sunday, Alleluia !
