EC 45 v Middlesex 36.
Report from Stuart Hudson
This development game was played in a format to allow both EC and Middlesex squads of 30 players each to demonstrate their skills and progress they have made to date with the U17’s programme. The playing time was split up into two 30 minute sessions and then two 20 minute sessions. This allowed all the players to get as much game time as possible.
In the first session EC started very strongly with the forwards firmly in control and with good driving play putting Middlesex on their back foot in all areas of the field. The excellent play resulted in 4 tries coming from the forwards where the inter -passing and support play was well delivered. The result was 26 pts to nil to EC.
EC then brought on a completely different 15 for the next session and this time Middlesex were the improved side and they set up the early dominance in the game. EC were winning procession, but then losing it with rushed decision making and handling errors. Middlesex scored first with their big center who was strong and fast, breaking in the middle of the field and run in under the posts. EC came back well and settled into their game, and scored a try through the forwards. The game then became a battle in the EC half and both sides were making mistakes. Middlesex again broke free and a series of missed tackles gave them the winning try. EC 7 Middlesex 14
The third session saw the first set of EC players back on with a few changes to see how players played as units. This was a tight game with both sides playing better and with more continuity. The defences were solid and EC were pinned in their own half when good team work by EC created an opening out wide and slick passing saw EC score under the post after a final run in by the EC full back. EC changed the formation again and then scored again after good forward pressure. Middlesex came back and again scored through the centre of the field with the same Middlesex centre running strongly and fending off tacklers. EC 14 Middlesex 5
The final session was again with the second set of EC players with a few changes due to injuries. EC were under pressure from the start and the big Middlesex forwards had gained control of the ball and were taking the game to EC. The EC defence held up to start with, but the pressure soon told as EC were stretched in defence. EC conceded three tries and were unable to reply. EC 0 Middlesex 17.
Overall a great afternoon of rugby with EC and Middlesex coaches and management able to see 60 young players all give their best. EC run out overall winners 45 pts to 36pts. The EC U17’s demonstrated how much they have come on and the lessons learnt will help the EC players develop further in the future.
