Eastern Counties Rugby Union was saddened to learn of the deaths of two significant members of the rugby community in the East of England in recent weeks.
Howard Cross
Howard Cross was President of Eastern Counties for 1997-1999. Although his own club (Metropolitan Police, Chigwell) formed part of the Essex County Union when those clubs separated from Eastern Counties in 2003, Howard remained an interested observer of Eastern Counties rugby and many were pleased to renew acquaintance with him when he attended the celebrations of ECRU's 125th anniversary despite poor health and having relocated to Harrogate.
David Harvey
David Harvey - known as 'Goof' - was a well liked figure within both Cambridgeshire and Suffolk rugby having been active in both counties' youth systems.
He was was taken ill whilst following the Lions in New Zealand and then readmitted to hospital shortly after his return home to Ely.
Originally from Ely, David joined the Suffolk team as Youth Development Officer in 2005 where he was responsible for the establishment, operation and coaching of the county youth squads until 2013. He also coached at Colchester and St Joseph's College before returning to Ely where he became involved in both the club colts and the Cambridgeshire under-17 squads.
