For their second game in the RFU CB series, the Eastern Counties U16s made the long foggy trip to Southwell RFC to face NLD.
EC started the strongest and within two minutes they were ahead thanks to a try from Archie Tarbuck converted by Tommy Freeman.
EC continued to apply pressure but after 10 mins NLD broke through for a converted try of their own to make it 7-7
The next 20 minutes, saw both sides share possession but neither could break through until EC’s Ollie Newman went over with 3 minutes remaining, to make it 7-12. With half time looming, that’s the way it seemed to be going until NLD intercepted and ran in with the last play of the half to even things up. Half time 12-12
NLD started the stronger in the 2nd half and ran in 3 unanswered tries to find themselves 31-12 with 11 minutes gone. EC’s Newman went over for another which Jamie Light converted but NLD came straight back with another to make it 36-19.
The EC boys didn’t drop their heads and continued to keep themselves in it with a try from Oli Udy and conversion from Jamie Light to close the gap to 36-26 but NLD weren’t finished and ran in another to make it 41-26. EC finished the game with Ollie Newman running over for his 3rd try of the afternoon and the game finished 41-31.
The squad have one more training session on weds 15th Feb to prepare for their final game in this year’s programme against East Mids. on Feb 19th at The Leys, Cambridge. KO 1pm.
