During October 1981 a meeting was held in a Swaffham pub
attended by 10 people, all keen to start a new rugby club. That was the beginning. Within a couple of months from that meeting kit had been borrowed, a team assembled and the first game played against Thetford. The Club quickly consolidated when the ground was subsequently purchased and in 1987 the first clubhouse was opened by former England Captain Budge Rogers. In 2001, after strenuous fund raising efforts, a new clubhouse was constructed and floodlights installed providing outstanding facilities to support rugby in this area of Norfolk.
Moving to the present day, on 13th November, a luncheon was held at the clubhouse to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Swaffham RUFC. Club President, Mike Fields, says "Swaffham has always been a Club that prides itself on traditional values and community rugby". He was keen to mark the Clubs historic journey. The event also celebrated the part every member, past and present, has played to get the Club to the position where it is today, with solid foundations in the local community and competing positively in Eastern Counties Division 2 North.
At the luncheon ECRU President John Winders presented Mike Fields with a certificate recognising this important occasion. Also pictured below is Bill Rollings the Clubs first ever President. Bill subsequently took over the Presidency of ECRU during the period 1993-95.
