Eastern Counties Wanderers Team Manager Ian Whitby says he has already identified “31 players” from the 60-70 observed, that will make up part of the newly formed Eastern Counties Wanderers squad.
The players have been identified as a result of the new “Tri-Counties Tournament”, which consists of the 3 counties under the EC umbrella, of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, competing against one another, to be crowned the best county in the Eastern Counties.
For the County Coaches however and coaches of clubs from those counties in question, it is more a case of ensuring all player’s in their respective counties’ sides are given the platform to show Eastern Counties selectors their highest ability in a match environment, putting their hand up for one of the Men’s three representative sides.
Given the nature of the side’s represented in these fixtures, namely Level 6 and below, it is highly likely that most of the player’s competing are all competing with the remit to be selected for the Eastern Counties Wanderer’s side, with the EC Senior Men’s side now usually consisting of players from Level’s 3, 4 and 5.
The tournament concludes on the 16th of January, with Cambridgeshire v Norfolk taking place at Ely Rugby Club. The game has a kick off time of 19:45hrs, with all fans of Rugby in both counties encouraged to attend as it is a deciding game, with the winner taking home the prestigious “Tri-Counties Tournament Trophy”.
The previous results that enabled for this fixture to be the decider of the tournament, ended like this:
Suffolk 20 – 32 Cambridgeshire
Norfolk 60 – 19 Suffolk
Eastern Counties would like to thank the following clubs for enabling the release of their players to play in the Tri-Counties tournament games and put their hands up for selection:

Hadleigh RFC
Sudbury RFC

Team Manager, Whitby, who splits his time between Eastern Counties in this new role, as well as holding the role of Kit Manager at National League 1 Cambridge RUFC said, “It is very encouraging to not only see the number of player’s that have represented their counties over the past 2 games, but their individual skill and quality in each position on the field. It is testament to their Junior Clubs right across the Eastern Counties that we have such a talent pool to choose from.
“Also, the hard-fought games on both counts have not necessarily been reflected in the scores, especially that of the game between Norfolk and Suffolk. We look forward to watching the decider play out at Ely Rugby Club on January the 16th”.
